EGL or NASC Region?

If you are in:
  • The Waikato-Coromandel Region, Greater Manawatu Region, or Christchurch Selwyn Region extending to Cheviot, you are within the regions that utilize the EGL (Enabling Good Lives) Approach for assessment and self-management of disability funding.
  • Bordering these regions, contact the respective EGL organization listed below to confirm if you fall under the EGL jurisdiction.
  • Any other part of New Zealand (e.g., Auckland, Wellington, Tauranga, Dunedin, etc.), you are in the NASC (Needs Assessment Service Coordination) Region.
EGL and NASC - Key Differences:
Enabling Good Lives (EGL):
  • Core Principles: Based on respect for disabled people and their whānau (family) to have greater involvement in decisions affecting their support and lives.
  • Process: Instead of multiple organizations, there's a single organization per EGL region handling applications and assessments.
  • Support: Utilizes "Connectors" or 'Independent Facilitators' who:
    • Guide through the application and assessment process.
    • Assist in accessing and managing a flexible personal budget.
    • Help with support planning, setting life goals, and connecting with community resources.
Contact Information for EGL Regions:
Needs Assessment Service Coordination (NASC):
  • Role of Facilitators: Known as Needs Assessment Service Coordinators, they:
    • Conduct needs assessments.
    • Plan and coordinate services.
    • Allocate resources within a predefined budget.
  • Approach: Generally more structured and might involve multiple coordinators during the process, with each NASC provider having its own internal processes for applications and assessments.

Key Considerations:
  • The EGL Process offers a more in-depth support system by assigning you a single 'connector' throughout the entire application and assessment journey. This method is unique to EGL, as it includes its own distinct processes for application and assessment, which can vary across its three regions. This contrasts with NASC, where numerous organizations operate across New Zealand, each with their own internal procedures for handling applications and assessments.
  • NASC involves a more straightforward and structured method of assistance, where you might work with one or several coordinators through the application and assessment phases. Each NASC provider has its own distinct processes for handling these applications and assessments, differing from those of EGL. Given the multitude of NASC providers, each operates with its unique internal procedures for managing applications and assessments.
General Advice:
Whether in an EGL or NASC region, thorough preparation is crucial for the best assessment outcome. Understanding your needs and how to articulate them effectively can significantly influence the support you receive.
